About us

Built in Ōtautahi Christchurch, for people who'd rather sell something than just ask

Generous.nz started at our kitchen table. Two teenagers in the house needed to raise money β€” one to get to the Girl Guide Jamboree, the other to compete at the Australian National Disc Golf league.

Neither of them wanted to simply put a hand out. They wanted to sell things, the way they had for Commerce Day at high school: things they'd made, baking, second-hand finds, a service or two. The tools that existed didn't fit. Donation pages are great for collecting koha, but they don't let a teenager sell a tray of brownies or a hand-painted sign. Marketplace listings don't connect to a cause. So we built the thing that was missing: a fundraising page that can take donations and sell items, in one place.

I've worked in IT for more than 25 years and have run a number of businesses along the way, building a lot of websites in that time. Finding a genuinely new problem to solve is the part I enjoy most β€” Generous.nz came out of one we had ourselves.

What Generous.nz does

Generous.nz is a fundraising platform for individuals, clubs, schools and community groups. Anyone can start a fundraiser page, share it, and show how much they've raised so far.

On their page, fundraisers can:

  • βœ“Ask for donations

One-off or monthly, with a receipt emailed automatically.

  • βœ“Sell your own items

Drawings, crafts, baking, second-hand finds, services β€” whatever you can make or do.

  • βœ“Sell straight from your page

Products, tickets and vouchers sold through your fundraising page, with checkout built in.

  • βœ“Earn from business offers

Add products from NZ businesses to your page and earn a share of every sale they make.

  • βœ“Paid straight to your bank

Everything raised goes to your own Stripe-verified bank account. We never hold your money.

Everything raised goes straight to their own Stripe-verified bank account.

⭐ The business area (for suppliers)

Businesses can list products or vouchers on the platform and set the share fundraisers earn β€” a minimum of 10%.

Fundraisers add those offers to their page. When a supporter buys through the fundraiser's link, the fundraiser earns their share, paid by the business. The buyer pays the business directly and the business fulfils the order.

It lets a business support local fundraisers and make sales at the same time.

The practical bits

  • Fees. Platform fees are 5% + GST on what you raise, and new fundraisers start with a fee-free credit β€” see the sign-up page for the current offer. Donors can choose to cover the fee so 100% of their gift reaches you. Stripe's card processing also applies.
  • We never hold your money. Payments are processed by Stripe and paid out to your own account. The platform only ever invoices its own fee.
  • Reviewed for safety. Every fundraiser, product and order is screened automatically, and anything uncertain goes to a human before it goes live.
