Getting started

Creating an account
You can sign up with an email and password on the registration page, or with Google/Apple once social login is configured. Accounts are free — you only pay the platform fee when you raise money. Bought something without an account? One is created automatically after your first payment, and you'll get an email with a secure link to set a password.
Connecting your payout account
Before you can receive donations or sales, connect a payout account from your dashboard using the "Connect your payout account" button. This opens secure Stripe onboarding; money then pays out to your NZ bank account.
Setting up your first fundraiser
Go to New fundraiser and follow the steps: title, story, goal, cover image, and campaign type. You can save as a draft or submit for moderation right away.
Campaign types
Campaigns come in six types: donations, product sales, event tickets, raffles (licence required), peer-to-peer supporter pages, and supporter subscriptions. You can change the type when creating the campaign.
How goals and progress work
Your goal is shown as a progress bar on your public page. The bar counts donations and product sales (including wholesale sales), so it tells the truth on every campaign type. Goals are optional.
  • Almost there: the bar shows how much is left to go, which encourages supporters to help you cross the line.
  • Goal reached 🎉: the bar celebrates, your supporters are emailed, and an update is posted to your campaign automatically.
  • Extend the goal: once you reach it, you can raise your target from your dashboard — this resets the "almost there" urgency and lets the celebration fire again at the new goal.

Fundraisers

Creating a fundraiser page
Every campaign gets its own public page at /f/your-campaign-name once approved. You can share the link anywhere.
QR code for your fundraiser page
From Edit fundraiser you'll find a Share your page box showing a QR code for your public page — with the Generous.nz G in the middle. Anyone who scans it lands straight on your fundraiser.
  • Use it on posters, flyers, receipts, newsletters or anything printed.
  • Click Download QR (PNG) to save a high-resolution copy.
  • The code always points to your live /f/… page, so it keeps working even if you redesign your campaign.
What are you fundraising for? (reasons)
When you set up a campaign you can tick what you're raising for — medical costs, education, sport, community projects, animal welfare, environment, arts & culture, faith, emergencies, events and more.
  • Your selections show as badges on your public page so supporters and businesses can see your cause at a glance.
  • Our AI checks your story against your selections in the background. If a tag isn't supported by your story it's removed (and the campaign is reviewed), and tags your story clearly describes are added.
  • Some businesses choose not to fundraise for certain causes. If you're raising for one of those, their catalogue items show as not available for your fundraiser.
Writing your story
Tell your story in your own words on the campaign creation form — who you are, why you're raising money, and what the funds will do. Stories are reviewed (by AI and, where needed, a human) before a campaign can go live, and honest, specific stories tend to raise more.

Prefer a helping hand? Type a few sentences in the story box (who you are, what happened, what the money is for), then tap ✨ Generate with AI to expand your notes into a full draft — the button unlocks once you've written enough detail, and you can edit the draft before publishing.

Adding updates
From your public campaign page, post an update to keep supporters in the loop. Updates are emailed to opted-in supporters and sent as push notifications to those with notifications enabled.
Sharing your fundraiser
Copy your public page link and share it anywhere — social media, email, newsletters. The AI tools can draft social posts for you.
Campaign settings
Owners can edit their campaign (story, goal, cover image, category and type, plus the reasons they're fundraising for) from the dashboard; changes to content re-run moderation and AI checks.
Closing or archiving a campaign
Campaigns can be archived, which takes them off the public site. Payment and payout records are always retained for reporting.
Peer-to-peer supporter pages
P2P campaigns let supporters create their own pages (/p2p/their-page) with a personal story and goal. Donations made on those pages count toward both the page and the main campaign.
Delivery and shipping charges
Businesses that sell physical items can choose where they deliver (all of New Zealand, North Island or South Island) and set simple metro and rural delivery charges.
  • At checkout you enter the delivery address, including the 4-digit postcode. We work out the correct zone from the postcode and add the right delivery charge to your order.
  • The AI double-checks the address against the postcode and the supplier's coverage. If something looks off, the order is checked by a human before it's fulfilled.
  • If the supplier doesn't deliver to your area, the order can't be placed and you'll see why.
Raffle campaigns
Raffles require a licensed raffle number. They go through licence verification before ticket sales can start, and sales pause if the licence expires. See the Prohibited Items List for details.

Selling items

Listing an item
From your dashboard, choose "New listing", pick your fundraiser, and add a title, price, description, photos and inventory. Listings are moderated before going live.
Uploading photos
Upload JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF or AVIF images up to 5 MB each — you'll see a preview as you add them. You can upload several at once: hold Ctrl/Cmd in the file picker to select multiple, or drag & drop a batch onto the Upload photo button. Up to 12 images per product. Every upload is automatically resized to a 600px long edge (quality 80) before it's stored, so pages stay fast. You can also paste image URLs.
AI product descriptions
Use "Generate with AI" on the listing form to draft a clear description, then review and edit it before submitting.
Pricing your items
Prices are set by you in the campaign's currency. A 5% + GST platform fee applies to each sale (NZD); the net amount is paid out to your connected bank account.
Pickup and delivery options
Every listing can be fulfilled by pickup, courier, local delivery, or digitally (vouchers) — you choose when you create the listing and add the details buyers need:
  • Pickup — add a pickup location so buyers know where to collect.
  • Courier — add metro and rural delivery charges if you charge for shipping.
  • Local delivery — describe the area you cover (e.g. within 20 km of Christchurch CBD).
  • Digital — for vouchers; nothing to ship.
After a sale you'll set the delivery or collection date and add courier tracking — see Fulfilling orders and adding tracking.
Managing inventory
Set how many of each item you have. Stock decreases automatically as orders are paid, and items show as sold out when depleted.
Editing or removing a listing
Owners can edit listings (changes re-run moderation) or remove them so they're no longer purchasable.
Prohibited items
Weapons, drugs, counterfeit goods, stolen items, unlicensed raffles and more can never be listed. See the full Prohibited Items List.
Fulfilling orders and adding tracking
When someone buys your item it appears under Sales & orders in your dashboard with the buyer's details.
  • Set the delivery or collection date.
  • Choose the courier (NZ Post / CourierPost, Aramex, or Other) and enter the tracking number.
  • Click Save & notify to email the buyer the update, or mark the order shipped / complete.
The buyer automatically receives an email with the courier and tracking number, including a direct Track your delivery link (NZ Post links go straight to the parcel). Wholesale orders are fulfilled by the supplying business — fundraisers see "Managed by the wholesale business" and don't need to do anything.

Donations

How to donate
Open any campaign page and use the donate form. You don't need an account — payment is handled securely by Stripe.
One-off vs recurring donations
Choose a one-off gift or a monthly donation. Monthly donors can name their supporter tier on subscription campaigns, and manage cancellation through the receipt email or Stripe.
Anonymous donations
Tick "Donate anonymously" and your name won't appear on the supporter wall. Your email is still used for your receipt.
Covering platform fees
Tick "Cover the platform fee" and your gift includes the 5% + GST fee amount, so the fundraiser receives the full gift and can pay the platform fee from it.
Donation receipts
A receipt is emailed automatically when your donation completes. Keep it for your records; tax treatment depends on your situation and the campaign's status.
Refunds for donations
Donations are generally non-refundable, but mistakes, cancelled or fraudulent campaigns are handled case by case. See the Refund Policy.

Payments & payouts

How payments work
Every payment is a direct charge: the buyer pays the seller's own Stripe account, and Stripe pays the seller out to their bank. Generous.nz never receives, holds or routes the money.
  • Donations and items the fundraiser sells themselves are paid to the fundraiser.
  • Wholesale items are paid to the supplying business (they're the seller of record and they fulfil the order). The business then pays the fundraiser's commission automatically from a card they save once.
  • Receipts show the seller's name — the business for wholesale items, the fundraiser otherwise.
  • The platform fee is not taken from the payment. It's invoiced to the fundraiser separately (see “Understanding platform fees”).
Understanding platform fees
The platform fee is 5% + GST (15% on the fee) for NZD transactions.
  • Fundraisers get their first $250 raised fee-free — no platform fee until $250 has been raised. After that, the 5% + GST fee is invoiced weekly and charged automatically to the payment card they save in their dashboard. Add the card once — we handle the rest.
  • Donors can choose to “cover fees”, which adds the fee amount to their gift so the fundraiser keeps more of it.
  • Businesses pay the fundraiser's commission (minimum 10%) from a card they save once, plus a 5% + GST platform fee on the sales generated through fundraisers — invoiced weekly and charged to the same card. Your first $1,000 of sales are free (no platform fee), credit can be applied, and there's no charge if there are no sales.
Commission invoicing (for businesses)
When a fundraiser sells one of your products, you receive the full sale amount directly into your Stripe account. You owe the fundraiser a commission (minimum 10% of the sale price).
  • We batch commissions and automatically generate an invoice from the fundraiser to you.
  • The invoice is charged to the payment card you add once in Billing (Dashboard → Wholesale → Billing).
  • The money goes straight to the fundraiser's Stripe account — it never passes through us.
  • You also receive a separate weekly platform-fee invoice (5% + GST of sales generated), charged to the same card.
  • Refunded or disputed orders cancel the commission on that order.
  • Direct sales: if a buyer purchases your product straight from the catalogue (no fundraiser), the commission is paid to the Generous.nz Community Campaign using the same automatic invoicing. If the buyer came via a fundraiser that added your product, that fundraiser gets the commission instead.

Add your card in Billing.

When payouts are sent
Payouts are made through Stripe Connect to the connected bank account on Stripe's payout schedule, once the account's onboarding is complete. Your own sales and donations pay straight to your Stripe account. Wholesale commissions are batched weekly (7 days) — and on new fundraiser accounts, commissions are held for 30 days from the first wholesale sale before they start settling weekly, as a fraud protection.
Viewing payout history
Platform staff can view and manage all payouts in the admin Payouts area, including manual records and status tracking.
Failed or delayed payouts
Payout failures are usually bank-detail or onboarding issues. Check your Stripe account status; admins can see failure reasons on the Payouts page.
Refunds and chargebacks
Refunds are processed back to the original payment method. Because the seller is the merchant of record, refunds and chargebacks come out of the seller's Stripe balance — the business for wholesale items, the fundraiser for their own items and donations. Commission on a refunded wholesale order is cancelled automatically. See the Refund and Dispute policies.
Dispute resolution
Start by contacting the other party, then request platform help. Full process: Dispute Resolution Policy.
Vouchers — codes, PDFs and redemption
Vouchers are bought from a fundraiser's page like any other item. The moment payment goes through:
  • The buyer is emailed the voucher code(s) automatically, with a printable page and a PDF download.
  • Codes are single-use — once sold, they are never reused.
  • The voucher shows what it's for, who it's from (the business), the fundraiser it supports, how to redeem, and the conditions.
  • Gift purchases email the voucher to the recipient too.
Buyers can always find their vouchers (codes and PDFs included) under My purchases. Businesses see every code they've sold and mark codes redeemed from their Voucher sales page.
My purchases and tracking your orders
Every purchase is linked to a Generous.nz account. If you buy without signing in, an account is created automatically after your first payment and you'll get a "Your Generous.nz account is ready" email with a secure link to set a password.
  • Sign in and open My purchases (in the top menu) to see every order: item, campaign, amount and status.
  • Delivery — expected date and address, courier, tracking number and a direct track link.
  • Vouchers — your codes, gift details, how to redeem, and "Download PDF" / "View & print" buttons.
  • Bought something as a guest before? Signing up with the same email links those orders to your account automatically.

For businesses

How wholesale works
Businesses offer products or vouchers at a wholesale cost; fundraisers add them to their pages and keep at least 10% of every sale. Buyers pay the business directly (via Stripe Connect), and the business fulfils the order — the platform never holds the money.
  • Apply from your dashboard (For businesses) — free to list, no charges until you have sales.
  • Set your sale price and minimum commission (10%+), plus voucher codes and redemption details for vouchers.
  • Fundraisers browse the catalogue and add your items to their store in one click.
  • You get each order with the buyer's details, mark it fulfilled, and add courier tracking.
  • Buy now: anyone can also buy a product directly from its catalogue page without a fundraiser. The business still receives the payment and fulfils the order; the commission on that direct sale supports the Generous.nz Community Campaign.
  • Signed-in fundraisers see a "Sell & make up to $X" figure on each product, showing what they'd earn per sale at the minimum price.
Wholesale go-live checklist
Your store isn't live until the first three items on the Go-live checklist are complete:
  • Wholesaler application approved — apply from your dashboard; the application is reviewed (AI-screened and human-approved) before you can list anything.
  • Stripe payout account connected — without it, no order can ever be placed.
  • Payment card added — platform fees and fundraiser commissions are charged to it automatically; without it, items can't go live.
Then make sure you have a first product approved (AI review or moderation) that's active and not expired, and — for voucher products — codes available (generated or pasted), or buyers will hit "out of voucher codes". The checklist shows your progress with a bar and marks items done as you complete them.
How many products can I list? (35 active)
Each wholesale store can keep up to 35 active products in its catalogue. Paused and removed items don't count — pause or delete an item to free up a slot. Your catalogue page shows a bar with how many slots you've used and how many remain, and the "Add product" button greys out once you hit the limit.
Choosing which causes you support
From Dashboard → Wholesale → Restrictions you can choose which causes you'd rather not support:
  • Tick a cause and your items are hidden from fundraisers raising for that cause — they can't add your offers to their store.
  • Tick Generous.nz Community Campaign and your items won't be offered for direct purchase on the public catalogue, but fundraisers can still sell them.
  • Fundraisers never see the reason — excluded items just don't appear for the causes you've ticked.
Setting up voucher products
From Catalogue products → Add product, choose Voucher:
  • Add a How to redeem note (the exact steps buyers follow) and conditions — both are shown on the buyer's voucher.
  • Generate voucher codes or paste your own in bulk; every code is single-use. Prefer hands-free? Switch on auto-generated codes and a fresh unique code is minted automatically for every sale (up to your stock).
  • When a voucher sells, the buyer gets the code by email with a printable and PDF voucher; you see the sale in Voucher sales.
  • Mark codes redeemed as customers use them, so you always know what's outstanding.
Fulfilling wholesale orders
Orders appear in Orders to fulfil with the buyer's delivery details. Set the delivery or collection date, choose the courier (NZ Post / CourierPost, Aramex, or Other), add the tracking number, then save-and-notify or mark shipped / complete. Buyers are emailed automatically with the courier and a direct tracking link.

You can export your orders as a CSV anytime for your own system or shipping labels.

Stripe setup

Full Stripe account setup (step by step)

To receive money on Generous.nz you connect a Stripe account — the same safe system used by thousands of NZ businesses. Stripe is legally required to verify anyone who receives money, so onboarding asks a few more questions than a typical sign-up. It usually takes about 10–15 minutes, done once.

What you'll need ready:

  • Your full legal name and date of birth
  • Your home address, email and phone number
  • A NZ driver licence or passport (for identity verification)
  • Your NZ bank account details for payouts
  • Your IRD number, if requested
  • A short description of your activity — e.g. “fundraising / selling goods for a cause” (choose “individual / sole trader” if you're not a business)

Steps:

  1. Sign in and open your dashboard.
  2. Click Connect your payout account (Stripe).
  3. Complete Stripe's hosted onboarding — Stripe collects your details and identity documents directly and runs the checks itself (KYC/AML).
  4. Wait for verification — usually minutes, sometimes a day or two.
  5. Start receiving donations and sales. Money pays out to your bank account on Stripe's schedule.
  6. Add your payment card from the dashboard — it's charged automatically for your weekly 5% + GST platform fee invoice.

Good to know: Generous.nz uses Stripe Connect Standard accounts with Stripe-hosted onboarding. You never hand your bank details or ID to Generous.nz — Stripe collects them directly and the platform never sees them. This is the lowest-friction setup Stripe offers for fundraisers. Businesses and wholesalers follow the same flow; they're asked for company details instead, and they also add a payment card in their Billing settings that's used to pay fundraiser commission automatically.

If the button still says “Connect your payout account” after onboarding, the verification may still be pending — click it to continue where you left off. If you get stuck, contact support@generous.nz.

Why do I need to verify my identity and give my bank details?

Stripe is legally required to verify anyone who receives money (anti-money-laundering / know-your-customer laws). Because fundraisers receive payments, Stripe treats them like a seller — even if you're just selling cookies for a school trip.

The verification exists to protect everyone:

  • You — only you can receive the money; it can't be diverted to someone else.
  • Donors and buyers — they know the money goes to a real, verified person or organisation.
  • The platform — it keeps fraudsters and money laundering off the site.

Your bank details are used only for payouts. Your identity documents are used only by Stripe to verify who you are — Generous.nz never stores or sees them.

Understanding the admin Payments setup page

The Payments setup page (Admin → Payments setup) is the platform owner's Stripe health check. It shows configuration status without ever revealing secrets:

  • Secret key — whether Stripe keys are set and valid (they live in .env on the server).
  • Webhook secret — whether the payment webhook signing secret is configured.
  • Webhook events — the list of events Stripe must send (payments, refunds, disputes and invoices — including events from sellers' connected accounts). Missing events appear as warnings.
  • Connected accounts — fundraisers' and wholesalers' Stripe onboarding status, with a Refresh account status action to re-check after someone completes onboarding.

Use this page when payments aren't working: check the keys first, then the webhook events, then the connected account status. The full manual configuration guide is in docs/stripe-setup.md.

Organisations

Creating an organisation
Create an organisation from your dashboard to run fundraisers as a team. Add your charity number to start verification.
Adding team members
Owners and admins can invite members by email. Roles are Member, Admin and Owner, with safety rules: an org always keeps at least one owner, and only owners manage other owners.
Roles and permissions
Members create campaigns, Admins manage members and settings, and Owners control everything including ownership.
Campaign builder
Organisations can use the 3-step campaign builder (type, details, story, review) from the organisation dashboard.
Storefront and branding
Your public storefront shows your logo, cover, colours and campaigns. Pick a theme preset, or set your own brand colour and attach a custom domain.
Organisation reporting
The organisation dashboard shows financials, supporter pages and event attendee lists across all your campaigns.

AI tools

AI fundraiser story generator
On the campaign form, write a few sentences of detail in your story box (who you are, what happened and what the funds go toward), then tap "Generate with AI". The AI expands your notes into a full draft you can edit before publishing. You need enough detail first — the button stays locked until you've typed a bit about what you want to say.
AI product description generator
Draft clear product descriptions from your listing title and condition.
AI organisation tools
Organisations get dedicated AI tools for newsletters, sponsor proposals, grant drafts, emails and social posts, with history and editing.
AI moderation and fraud scoring
Campaigns are automatically screened for prohibited content and scored for fraud risk (heuristics plus AI classification when configured). Staff review flagged items in the moderation queue.

Trust & safety

Identity verification
Fundraisers and sellers verify their identity through Stripe Connect onboarding. Verified owners show an "Identity verified" badge.
Charity verification
Organisations claiming charity status are checked (format and duplicate detection are automated) and confirmed by staff before the verified badge appears. See the Charity Verification Policy.
Reviews
Only supporters with a paid donation or purchase can leave a review. Reviews are screened for prohibited content before they're published.
Trust badges
Campaign pages and storefronts show badges like "Verified charity", "Identity verified", "Top fundraiser" and "Highly rated", computed from real activity.
Fraud detection and moderation
Every campaign and listing is screened on submission. Flagged content goes to the staff moderation queue; suspicious behaviour can hold payouts pending review.
Reporting a problem or suspicious activity
Contact safety@generous.nz to report suspicious campaigns, listings or users. Include the page link and what you saw.

Account & app

Signing in
Sign in with your email and password, or with Google/Apple when enabled. Social logins link to existing accounts by email.
Notifications
Transactional emails are sent automatically: receipts for donors and buyers, a celebratory "You received a payment" email to fundraisers when a donation or sale lands, fulfilment updates with courier tracking, and voucher delivery emails. Campaign updates are emailed to opted-in supporters and pushed to subscribed devices. Use the unsubscribe link in any email or your browser settings to stop campaign updates.
Install the app
Generous.nz is a progressive web app — use your browser's "Add to Home Screen" to install it on Android or iOS for an app-like experience.
Email preferences
Every campaign-update email includes a one-click unsubscribe link. Transactional emails like receipts are always sent.
Referral programme
Share your unique referral link and earn fee-free volume when new fundraisers or businesses join through it.
  • Fundraiser referrals: the new fundraiser gets their first $250 raised fee-free, and you earn $50 of fee-free fundraising volume once they complete setup.
  • Business referrals: the new business gets their first $1,000 of sales fee-free, and you earn $200 of fee-free sales volume.
  • Anyone who clicks your link is tracked for 5 days — if they sign up within that window, the referral counts. The first link they open is the one that counts: later links never overwrite it.
  • Your link opens a dedicated landing page that explains the offer and bonus, with a button straight to the sign-up form.
  • Find your link, click stats and rewards on the Refer a fundraiser or Refer a business page in your dashboard.

Policies & legal

Terms and policies
All agreements and policies are published on the legal documents page, including Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, Seller and Fundraiser Agreements, Refund and Dispute policies, AML/CFT and Charity Verification policies.
